Court Advocate Services
Justice Courts are established by counties and municipalities and have the authority to deal with class B and C misdemeanors, violations of ordinances, small claims, and infractions committed within their territorial jurisdiction. Justice Court jurisdictions are determined by the boundaries of local government entities such as cities or counties. The Vernal Victim Advocate Program provides court advocacy services to those listed as a victim on a case being prosecuted through Vernal City Justice Court.
Vernal Victim Advocates provide court advocacy services by notifying victims of pending arraignments, pretrial conferences and sentencing hearings. Advocates can help a victim to stay in contact with the prosecuting attorney and can represent a victim who does not wish to be present in the courtroom. Victim Advocates can also assist a victim in completing:
Victim Impact Statements
Victim impact statements (PDF) which allow the victim to inform the court how the crime impacted them and provide input on sentencing and restitution needs.
Crime Victim Reparations
Crime Victim Reparations (CVR) applications are forwarded to and screened through the Utah Office for Victims of Crime (UOVC). Vernal Victim advocates work with the staff at UOVC to assist victims in qualifying for counseling services, medical care, loss of wages due to the crime, replacement of door locks and other services depending on the crime committed.
